Basic Requirements Necessary for Success

Creating a successful Island 4 Kids,  depends on the people involved and maintaining accountability.
The goal is to develop Islands as an extended family consisting of surrogate parents, up to eight adolescents.  . Islands 4 Kids basic activity is Agrarian with other activities to add income to those earned  from farming.

WATER

Water source for drinking and for animals plus adequate water for irrigation.

A very good well is located in the main hall of the house.  It is possible and planned to dig another well in the garden area.  A river is less than ½ mile from the house.

ENERGY

Energy sources - availability of wood or bio mass for fuel, plus a program for realizing the implementation of renewable energy.
The island is located in the middle of the Transylvania forest.  Our plan is to build our own solar hot water system and  a wind generator and  solar panel system.

ENIRONMENTAL AND HEALTh

LAND

Fertile land for at least a 1 acre  garden and another 4 acres to raise crops. Land with at least 12 inches of good topsoil.
The garden area is 2 acres, another 8 acres can be rented for 10% of the crops raised paid when harvested.  Plenty of farmland can be purchased.
Land to pasture animals - 750 acres of open pasture exists with a small tax per animal to the local mayor.

SHELTER

Ideally, the house should include a kitchen, bathroom,  day room and 3 bedrooms. One bedroom for the “parents, one for the boys, one for the girls.
In this case the house is very large and arranged to accommodate the family. Outbuildings exist to accommodate a workshop ,  repair shop,  artisans studio, etc.
Provide waste water disposal in the form of a septic system.
This has been already built at the island in 2006 and has functioned without problems.

A realistic study of what is needed for the type  of farming possible and what other activities that will allow the family to realize a good profit in the  second year.  The first year should provide the food needed by the family when in season and for the period until the second harvest.

Calculate the food market (population) within 1 hour drive from the farm. One hour drive from the village three cities, average 300,000 persons each and another 500,000 in towns and villages.  Total 1,400,000 people.

Determine the client base for other activities or services offered by the Island family.
  •  Contract roto tiling and hay cutting is possible in 5 adjacent villages. More clients than we plan to contract.
  •  Immediate area (10 mile radius) for small tractor, lawn mower,  chain saw, garden tractor repair is 7,000 persons and very little credible competition.  One store selling new equipment will refer repairs and maintenance to the island shop..
  •  Small scale Septic tank production  - there are hundreds of villages  within in a 300 mile radius that have no municipal sewage and only 5 % have some form of septic system.

ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS

These and several other activities are planned to be developed over the first two years.
